Dry Dog Kibble Made at Home

brown rice, 1 cup & 1 tablespoon
12 cup lentils (100 g)
5 cup water (114 liters)
3 medium peeled and sliced carrots (200 g)
1 medium sweet potato, washed and diced (200 g)
12 cup unsweetened jelly or 1 apple, peeled, cored, and diced
34 cup steel-cut oats (100 g)
114 tablespoons fresh parsley, freshly chopped
2 fresh rosemary sprigs, freshly chopped
214 cup (500 g) 18 ounces of ground turkey
14 cup (50 ml) olives, sunflower, or canola oil, plus more for frying
- Fill a pot halfway with water and add the rice and lentils. Bring to the boil, then lower to medium and continue to simmer for 20 minutes.
- Add the remaining carrots, sweet potato, & apple to the saucepan after the rice & lentils are done cooking. Stir inside the oats & chopped herbs, then continue to gently boil for another 20 minutes. If the combination is too dry, add another cup of water. Heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit/180 degrees Celsius.
- Meanwhile, in a separate frying pan, brown the ground turkey. Because it is low in fat, you will need to constantly stir it as it cooks to keep this from sticking to a pan. The cooking time is around 10 minutes.
- In a food processor, combine half of the cooked vegetable & grain combination with half of the cooked turkey, half of the oil, & pulse till the mixture forms a thick purée.
- Grease two cookie sheets and put the batter onto one of them to a thickness of about 14 inches (5 mm). Allow a little space for the mixture to spread slightly. The mixture must not be too thick, since this will prevent the kibble from fully cooking.
- Use the other cookie sheet as well as the remaining ingredients to repeat the process.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake both cookie sheets for 45 minutes. Cook again for 30 45 minutes, turning the kibble over to dry it out. You should be able to fit two huge cookies in your mouth. Make sure that kibble is entirely cooked through, since any remaining damp portions may mold after a few days. If it isn't completely dry, return it to the oven for another 20 minutes and lower the temperature to 325°F/160°C. Remove the "kibble cookies" from the oven and set them aside to cool slightly before cutting them into little pieces. Return the pieces to a cookie sheet & bake for another hour, just until the kibble has dried completely (but not burnt).
- Take the kibble out of the oven and set it aside to cool fully. It should look like shattered pita bread. It will last 10 days in the fridge.
