How to Stop Your Dog From Chewing by Managing His Schedule

When it comes to managing your dog's time, it's all about incorporating various training techniques. As a first step, if your puppy has a tendency to chew, you should strictly adhere to the Three Rules of Housetraining. Rule 1: You must have a leash with you at all times while inside.

Rule 1 may seem strange at first to those unfamiliar with it, but if you give it a try, you'll see that it solves 90 percent of your problems. Simple as attaching your dog's collar to an old rope you don't use anymore, removing the handle to prevent it from getting tangled, and letting them go for a walk.

What's the point of doing this? It's like having a remote for the dog. Your dog can no more sneak away with something and chew it if you grab at him, pursue him, or otherwise frighten him. Is it now clear as to why this is referred to as Rule 1?

Rule 2: Outside, you must be on a leash.

When it comes to good house training, this guideline is more relevant than it is about eating. However, it can also be useful in the home because it allows you to practice teaching your dog to "Leave It" and "Come" when called, two important housetraining skills.

Rule 3: Dogs should be put in a crate when their owners are away

When it comes to chewing rules, this is a major one. Think of your dog's kennel as his or her own personal residence. They can go there without fear of harming themselves or your possessions. The crate is seen as a punishment by some, but in reality, dogs are den creatures and like having a peaceful retreat to retreat to. Aside from the fact that even if the dog doesn't appreciate the crate, it's much better for you and your family coming home to an unruly dog who's been in crate for a few hours and is eagerly waiting for your return, as opposed to a dog who has destroyed the family's dining room table. Dogs are not birds, so keep that in mind! A crate should only be used for a short period of time, not as a permanent residence.

That is why it is so important to follow the 3 Housetraining Rules to avoid most problems. You must, however, remain focused on your dog at all times. After decades of dealing with individuals, I am continually surprised when someone tells me their dog chews on a rubber bone or "I don't know" when I inquire exactly what sort toy they have for their pet. But it's not something he's keen on." If he chews on your children's toys and the new pair of shoes you just got, are you really surprised?

It is important to stock up on as many toys and chews as possible for your dog. When it comes to chew toys, my general rule is that they must have as many as their appetite dictates.

Like the 3 Housetraining Rules, this one is easy to follow and will solve most of your dog's issues. Puppies require a great deal of physical activity, and some breeds may require even more. It amazes us how so many people walk in and don't make the connection between the shortage of toys and the lack of information.
